Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Botanify, the free plant identification app
What is Botanify?
Botanify is a free plant identification app for iOS and Android. Take a photo of a plant and Botanify tells you what it is, how to care for it, and whether it may be toxic to pets. It also diagnoses plant diseases from a photo and answers plant care questions with an AI plant expert.
Is Botanify really free?
Yes. Botanify is completely free, with no ads, no subscription and no paywall. Every feature, including identification, disease diagnosis and the AI plant expert, is available at no cost.
How accurate is Botanify?
Botanify names the correct species as its top answer 80% of the time, and the correct species is in its top 3 suggestions 91% of the time. These figures are measured on a held-out test set of photos the model never saw during training. Clear, well-lit photos of leaves or flowers give the best results.
How many plant species can Botanify identify?
Botanify can identify 20,000 plant species from around the world, including houseplants, garden plants, trees, flowers, succulents and weeds. New species are added regularly.
Is Botanify available on Android and iPhone?
Yes. Botanify is available on the App Store for iPhone and on Google Play for Android.
Can Botanify tell me if a plant is toxic to my dog or cat?
Yes. Plant profiles in Botanify include toxicity notes for pets such as dogs and cats, so you can check a plant before bringing it home. Botanify is not a substitute for veterinary advice. If you think your pet has eaten a toxic plant, contact your vet straight away, or in the US call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 (fees may apply).
Can Botanify diagnose plant diseases?
Yes. Upload a photo of a sick plant in the Ask tab and Botanify suggests the likely disease, how severe it is, and step-by-step treatment and prevention advice. Its diagnosis is based on a reference set of 175,947 images across 482 plant disease categories.
Can I ask Botanify plant care questions?
Yes. The AI plant expert answers questions in plain language, such as "Why are my monstera leaves turning yellow?" or "How often should I water a snake plant?". Answers come from Botanify's plant knowledge base, and your conversations are saved and sync across devices when you sign in.
Do I need an account to use Botanify?
An account is free. You need one to save identified plants to My Plants and to keep your plant expert chat history in sync across devices.
How do I get the best identification results?
Photograph one plant at a time and fill the frame with it. Use natural light and avoid blur. Flowers, fruit and close-ups of leaves give the model the most to work with. If the first answer looks wrong, check the other top suggestions or try a second photo from a different angle.
How is Botanify different from PictureThis, PlantNet and iNaturalist?
Botanify combines plant identification, pet toxicity notes, disease diagnosis and an AI care expert in one app, and all of it is free. PictureThis offers similar features behind a subscription. PlantNet and iNaturalist are free, non-profit and cover far more wild species, but focus on identification rather than houseplant care. See our full comparison of plant identification apps.
How does Botanify's plant identification work?
Botanify uses a large pretrained vision model (DINOv2, fine-tuned on plant imagery by the PlantCLEF research team) with a lightweight classifier on top, trained on open botanical datasets including iNaturalist, PlantNet and PlantCLEF. Because only the classifier is retrained when species are added, Botanify can grow its catalog without losing accuracy on plants it already knows.
Who makes Botanify?
Botanify is built by an independent developer who wanted a plant identification app without ads or subscriptions. Read more on the About page, or get in touch.
